Frequently asked questions

How does Snacco check a food?

Three ways. You can scan the ingredients label (read on your device, then checked against our dog and cat toxin database), scan the barcode (looked up via Open Pet Food Facts), or — on Snacco+ — photograph the food itself ("Can my dog or cat eat this?"). A rules-based matcher produces the verdict; the app never lets a model decide safety on its own.

Does Snacco work for cats?

Yes. Add a cat profile — in onboarding or the Profile tab — and Snacco judges food against acat-specific toxin list, because cat toxins aren't the same as dog toxins (propylene glycol, for example, is banned in cat food but only a caution for dogs). If you keep both a dog and a cat, Snacco also flags a food that's fine for one but dangerous for the other — without changing the verdict for the pet you're checking.

Does "no toxins detected" mean the food is safe?

No. It means none of the ingredients we could read matched a known dog or cat toxin in our database. Labels can be incomplete or hard to read, and no database covers everything. Treat it as "nothing flagged in what we read", not a guarantee of safety, and always use your own judgement and your vet. This is why Snacco never displays the word "safe".

What do the verdicts mean?

Avoid means we matched an ingredient known to be toxic to your pet.Check with your vet means we matched something that can be a problem depending on the amount or your individual pet. No toxins detected means nothing in what we could read matched our database. Each flagged ingredient is tagged toxic orcaution and shows why it was flagged, with its source. When in doubt, check with your vet.

What's free, and what's Snacco+?

Scanning ingredient labels and barcodes is free. The optional "Can my dog or cat eat this?" photo check is part of Snacco+, a paid subscription. Pricing is shown in the app before you buy.

How do I manage or cancel Snacco+?

Snacco+ is billed through your Apple ID. To view, change, or cancel it, open theApp Store app → tap your profile → Subscriptions, then select Snacco. Cancelling stops future renewals; you keep access until the end of the current period. Note that deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.

I paid before but Snacco+ isn't showing.

On the paywall screen, tap Restore purchases. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID you bought it with. If it still doesn't appear, email us and we'll help.

What are recall alerts?

If you opt in, Snacco watches published Australian product recalls and checks them against your scan history on your device. If a product you scanned is recalled, you get a local notification. We never learn what you scanned — the server only sends an anonymous "recall list updated" signal.

The scan isn't reading my label.

Try good, even lighting, hold steady, and fill the frame with the ingredients panel (not the whole packet). Glossy or curved packaging can be tricky — if the read is partial, Snacco will say so rather than guess. You can re-scan as many times as you like.

How is my privacy handled?

Snacco has no accounts, no ads, and no third-party analytics; label photos are read on your device and never uploaded. Full detail is in the Privacy Policy.

Is Snacco veterinary advice?

No. Snacco is an informational tool, not veterinary advice or a medical device. For anything health- related, talk to your vet. See the Terms of Service for the full picture.
