Google Review Request Templates for Tradies: SMS and Email

Copy-ready Australian review request and reply templates, plus Google's current link, QR code and incentive rules for local businesses.

The short answer

Ask for a Google review after the job is complete, use one direct link and keep the message personal. Do not offer a discount, prize or free service. Do not tell the customer what rating to leave or give them wording to copy.

Google explicitly allows businesses to share a review link or QR code through receipts, thank-you emails, chat, WhatsApp and Facebook. Google also says reviews must reflect a genuine experience and incentives are prohibited. See Google’s review link and QR code instructions.

The templates below are starting points. Replace the bracketed text and keep the message consistent with how the business normally speaks.

On a computer browser:

  1. Open the Google Business Profile.
  2. Select Read reviews.
  3. Select Get more reviews and then the share icon.
  4. Copy the review link or download the QR code.

Google says the QR code is currently generated on a computer browser, not on mobile. Save the direct link in the phone, quoting system or job-completion workflow so it is easy to send after each completed job.

What Google’s policy allows

Google’s guidance permits:

  • reminding genuine customers to leave a review
  • sharing a direct review link
  • sharing a Google-generated QR code
  • including the link in receipts, emails or chat
  • replying to positive and negative reviews

Google prohibits incentives such as free or discounted goods or services in exchange for reviews. Its prohibited content policy also prohibits fake engagement and content that does not reflect a genuine experience.

Use the same review request process for genuine customers. Do not create staff reviews, write reviews for customers, use multiple accounts or ask customers to include a prepared keyword sentence.

Put the request into the job workflow

A simple workflow is enough:

  1. Mark the job complete.
  2. Confirm the customer has received the result or handover information.
  3. Send the normal thank-you message with the direct review link.
  4. Record that the request was sent so the customer is not repeatedly chased.
  5. Reply when a review appears.

The system should make a genuine request easy. It should not manufacture urgency or manipulate the rating.

Use the Google Business Profile optimisation guide to review the whole listing. Then use the tradie website and local SEO checklist to check how reviews, project proof and enquiry paths work together.

Frequently asked questions

Can a tradie ask customers for Google reviews?

Yes. Google allows businesses to remind genuine customers to leave a review and provides a direct review link and QR code. The request must not involve payment, a discount, a free service or another incentive.

When is the best time to ask for a review?

Ask after the customer has experienced the completed work and any immediate issue has been resolved. For many trade jobs, that means the same day as completion or after the customer confirms the result.

Should a business ask only happy customers for reviews?

No. Selectively asking only customers expected to leave a positive rating can distort the feedback process. Use one consistent request for genuine customers and make it easy for them to describe their real experience.

Can a business offer a discount for a Google review?

No. Google says free or discounted goods or services offered in exchange for a review are fake engagement and are strictly prohibited.
