The short answer
A local business improves its chance of appearing in AI-assisted search by doing the same fundamentals well: allow crawling, publish clear first-hand information, keep business details consistent, connect related pages and support claims with evidence.
There is no secret “AI schema” that guarantees inclusion. Google says there are no additional technical requirements or special schema needed for AI Overviews and AI Mode. OpenAI says public websites can appear in ChatGPT search, but inclusion requires access for OAI-SearchBot and top placement cannot be guaranteed.
Read the official guidance from Google Search Central and OpenAI’s publisher FAQ before paying for an AI-search shortcut.
Make the site crawlable and indexable
AI-assisted search still depends on finding public web pages. Start with the basics:
- important pages return a successful status
robots.txtdoes not block the search crawler you want to allow- public pages do not carry an accidental
noindex - the sitemap lists canonical public URLs
- important pages are linked from the site navigation or related content
- primary information is available as HTML text, not only inside images or client-side widgets
Google states that a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet before it can appear as a supporting link in its AI features. It also says crawling and serving are never guaranteed.
OpenAI distinguishes OAI-SearchBot, which supports ChatGPT search discovery, from GPTBot, which relates to potential model training. A publisher can make a separate decision for each crawler in robots.txt.
State the business facts plainly
An answer engine should not need to infer the basics from slogans. Important pages should identify:
- the legal or trading business name
- the services actually offered
- the areas genuinely served
- who operates the business
- contact and opening information
- licences, registrations or memberships that can be verified
- how quoting, booking or buying works
Keep those facts consistent across the website, Google Business Profile and other public profiles. Consistency does not mean repeating one keyword sentence everywhere. It means avoiding conflicting names, numbers, locations or service claims.
Build pages around real customer questions
AI systems often assemble answers from pages that address a specific part of a broader question. A useful content structure includes:
- a page for each priority service
- a limited set of genuine area pages
- practical cost or process guides
- case studies based on real work
- FAQs drawn from actual customer questions
- an About page that identifies the author or business operator
Lead each section with the direct answer. Follow it with evidence, scope and links to deeper material. Google’s people-first guidance asks whether content demonstrates first-hand expertise, gives a satisfying answer and adds original value. See Google’s helpful content guidance.
Use structured data accurately
Structured data can identify the type and properties of a page, but it must match what visitors can see. Useful types can include:
Organizationor an appropriateLocalBusinesssubtypeServiceArticleBreadcrumbListFAQPagewhen the questions and answers are visible
Do not add fake ratings, locations or services to JSON-LD. Google’s LocalBusiness structured data guidance recommends using the most specific appropriate subtype and validating the result.
Google also states that no special schema is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Schema is a clarity layer, not an AI inclusion switch.
Give claims a source
Specific claims are easier to trust when the reader can verify them. Useful evidence includes:
- an official government, standards or manufacturer source
- a named industry report with a date
- a real project photograph
- a customer review linked to its source
- a measured result with the method explained
- an author page describing relevant experience
Do not turn an illustrative scenario into a case study. If a result is hypothetical, label it as an example. If a statistic cannot be traced, remove it or replace it with a statement the business can support.
Connect the content
Internal links show how services, areas, guides and case studies relate. A roofing service page can link to a relevant suburb page and a completed project. The project can link back to the service.
Use descriptive link text. Google’s link best practices explain that internal anchor text helps people and Google understand pages and discover other content.
A resource hub should group content by the reader’s goal rather than showing a flat archive. Useful groups include website planning, local search, templates, trade guides and real builds.
Keep Google Business Profile accurate
For local results, the website is only part of the entity. Google says local ranking is mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. Complete and accurate Business Profile information helps Google understand the business and match it with relevant searches.
Maintain:
- the primary and secondary categories
- phone, website and opening hours
- service areas
- services or products
- real photos and videos
- customer reviews and business replies
Use the Google Business Profile optimisation guide for the practical workflow.
Measure what can be measured
Google reports AI Overview and AI Mode traffic inside the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type. OpenAI says referral URLs from ChatGPT search include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which can be measured in analytics.
Track:
- impressions and clicks by query and page in Search Console
- referral sessions from
chatgpt.com - phone clicks and successful enquiry forms
- landing pages that produce qualified work
Do not treat one manually tested AI answer as a stable ranking report. Results can vary by prompt, location, model and time.
What does not deserve priority
Be cautious with claims that a business needs:
- a special AI schema type
- hundreds of automatically generated question pages
- copied definitions written only to hit a word count
- fake citations or invented data
- guaranteed ChatGPT placement
- an llms.txt file presented as a Google ranking requirement
An llms.txt file can still be a useful index for compatible agents, but Google explicitly says new AI text files are not required for its AI features. Treat the file as supporting documentation, not a substitute for useful public pages.
A practical order of work
- Fix crawlability, indexability and canonical URLs.
- Make business identity and services consistent.
- Improve the core service and location architecture.
- Add verified proof and direct answers.
- Connect related pages with descriptive links.
- Validate structured data against visible content.
- Maintain the Business Profile.
- Measure search and referral traffic.

Frequently asked questions
Is there special schema for Google AI Overviews?
No. Google says there are no additional technical requirements and no special schema.org markup needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Existing SEO fundamentals still apply, and structured data should match visible page content.
Does llms.txt make a site appear in Google AI Overviews?
Google says websites do not need new AI text files or special markup to appear in its AI features. An llms.txt file can provide a concise machine-readable index for other consumers, but it is not a Google ranking requirement.
How can a site be included in ChatGPT search?
OpenAI says public websites can appear in ChatGPT search and that OAI-SearchBot must not be blocked if the site's content is to be included in summaries and snippets. Inclusion and ranking are not guaranteed.
Can a local business guarantee a mention in an AI answer?
No. Neither Google nor OpenAI offers a guaranteed top placement. The controllable work is making the business accurate, crawlable, useful, well sourced and consistent across its website and public profiles.
