iPhone app by Kovus
Photograph a meal and DishReveal estimates the calories, protein, carbohydrate and fat for each food. It names what it assumed, such as cooking oil, sauce or dressing, shows how confident it is, and lets you change the portions before anything is logged.
Free to download, with a local diary that needs no account. Apple sign-in adds 3 free AI meal logs; further AI logs, Coach and weekly reports need Pro. For adults 18 and over.

It is a food diary for iPhone that tracks calories, macros, water, exercise and weight, and shows your progress in home-screen and lock-screen widgets. There are several ways to log a meal. Apple sign-in adds three AI meal logs shared between photo and description, plus three corrections, for the life of your account. This allowance is not a subscription trial.
You can also save regular meals, keep progress photos on your iPhone, export and restore your diary, and connect Apple Health if you want to.
Adults 18 and over who would rather photograph or describe a meal than weigh it, and who want to check the estimate before it reaches the diary. If you log by hand, by barcode or from a nutrition label, the diary is free.

A photo cannot weigh food, so the result is an estimate you check before it is saved. This is what happens between the photo and your diary.
The app shrinks the photo and strips its metadata, then sends it for an estimate.
Google's Gemini, or Anthropic's Claude if Gemini is unavailable, names the visible foods, estimates their weight in grams and adds separate items for likely oil, butter, dressing or sauce. A plate, cutlery or a hand in the photo can help with scale.
Each item's calories must match its protein, carbohydrate, fat and any alcohol at 4, 4, 9 and 7 kcal per gram. A result that fails is retried once, and an unlikely portion is flagged for you to confirm. When confidence is low, the app can ask you one short question.
Each food shows its grams, macros and a confidence level, and assumed items are labelled. Change a portion or the macros and the calories update before anything reaches your diary.
The methodology page explains each check and what the confidence level means.

From published equations applied to your onboarding answers, with fixed rules for pace, safety floors and macros.
The methodology page shows every formula.

Your diary. It is stored on the device and can be included in your own device or iCloud backup. Kovus does not keep a server copy of your diary.
A meal photo or description is sent for an estimate only when you ask for one, and dictation and nutrition-label reading run on your iPhone. Apple Health is optional: DishReveal reads steps, active energy and workouts, writes dietary energy, protein, carbohydrate, fat and body mass. Coach works from a numeric summary of your recent days rather than your individual meals. With your consent, it sends that summary to Anthropic's Claude, with Google Gemini as a possible fallback. If Exercise add-back is on, the consent prompt can also ask to send today's energy credit and adjusted target to Anthropic. That credit can include Apple Health active energy; raw Health records and workouts are not sent.

DishReveal is free to download, and the local food diary works without an account. Manual entry, barcode and label scanning, food search, local photos, export and restore are free. Apple sign-in adds three lifetime AI meal logs by photo or description and three corrections. Further AI logs, Coach and weekly reports need Pro, which costs A$59.99 a year or A$14.99 a month. Online food search and barcode lookup also require sign-in.
A photo cannot weigh food, so every result is an editable estimate. Poor lighting, mixed dishes, restaurant recipes and hidden cooking fat can make an estimate wrong by more than 20%. DishReveal shows its assumptions and a confidence level so you can correct the entry before saving, and it does not advertise an accuracy percentage.
No. Your personalised plan appears before the optional Sign in with Apple step. Choose Not now, then Continue with free features to use the local diary. Yes. Settings → Export and restore creates a private JSON file, a ZIP with photos up to 64 MB, or a meal spreadsheet (CSV). A compatible JSON or ZIP can be restored locally by merging missing entries or replacing the diary; CSV cannot be restored. Delete account and data removes or unlinks your account records, then erases the diary on your iPhone. Cancel any Apple subscription separately.
